Inaugural Meeting PDF Print E-mail

Atamai Village gathered on Sunday 25th April for their first community meeting. A lot of items were presented on the groups agenda for the day, with many being rolled over for future meetings. It was great to finally see so many community members together in one place in not only a social capacity, but one of commitment and vision. The energy and conviction of members was truly inspiring, with this level of interest and passion in the project it is clear to see that this community will really get behind their vision and future goals.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of this meeting was to also see so many young families and children and to watch as members interacted and got involved in the care of all the children throughout the morning. The saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child, it is wonderful to know that we will be helping to realise that vision.

Nelson Mail article PDF Print E-mail

The article on Atamai Village in the Monday April 19 Nelson Mail contains several misquotes and factual errors.
Atamai Village is a successful eco-village in the initial stages of its development. Seventy percent of the Stage 1 titles are already spoken for.

One of the Village’s objectives is to be an educational resource for those interested in living well sustainably in a community setting. To this end a charitable trust was established to carry out these objectives. In time we came to realize that a charitable trust was not the most appropriate vehicle for land development, or for various parties to own common land. Over a year ago we initiated consultation with several law firms to identify the best legal structure to achieve these goals. We are now in the final stages of restructuring the legal framework for Atamai , which no longer requires charitable status. Once sufficient village infrastructure is in place to begin our educational activities we will reapply for charitable status.

Atamai did not solicit or receive donations from the public, nor did we claim any tax benefits based on the charitable status. All financing has been either from registered financial institutions or private funds, all of which have been adequately secured and received the benefit of independent legal advice when put in place.

While some few neighbours object to the project, we have received much support from people and organizations throughout the district.

All of us involved with Atamai are excited and enthusiastic about being part of an innovative human settlement model that we believe will be an asset to the region.

Kind regards

Jurgen

October Update PDF Print E-mail

Again it’s been more than two months since the last update went out and there is news aplenty.

The land

Our flock of goats and a few turkeys have joined the hens on TeMara. The garden is doing well although the abundance of rain and somewhat colder weather is making things slow to start this year. We got hold of a great many new heirloom varieties this spring which are all sprouting well. Most of the trees of the first years planting are now poking their heads out of the grass and it is good seeing some marginal land being reforested. We recently extended the Atamai land holdings by another 10 ha of adjacent land including some prime garden slopes which will allow us the increase the area under production fivefold.

Spring Update PDF Print E-mail

It’s been more than two months since the last update went out and as usual lots of things have happened:

The land

TeMara’s garden area is expanding with new terraces being formed behind the house. This years tree planting is nearly complete. The just increased flock of hens are producing lot’s of eggs and spring is just about here. Jacques and Cheryl’s and Joni’s next project is to get ready for the small goat herd. Work on the track connecting the TeMara food production land directly with the village is making as much progress as the weather allows.
